Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort & Spa | Arizona
SWABACK’s design approach for the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale honored the resort’s established identity while elevating the guest experience through thoughtful enhancement rather than radical transformation. The comprehensive renovation encompassed both the main lobby and the creation of an entirely new spa facility, each responding to the unique character of place that defines this desert destination.
The lobby renovation required a delicate balance—refreshing spaces that had served the resort well without diminishing their inherent strengths. The design team reimagined the main entry, lobby, bar and lounge as a cohesive sequence of experiences. Strategic relocation of the stairwell improved circulation and opened sight lines to the McDowell Mountains, framing the dramatic desert landscape as an integral part of the interior experience. A new lounge stage now accommodates live music, dance performances, and social gathering, while the completely redesigned bar features an illuminated back wall and state-of-the-art equipment that enhances both functionality and ambiance.
The 18,000-square-foot spa, emerged from a more fundamental exploration of wellness, place, and experience. The design synthesizes three essential influences: the contemporary understanding of biophilia and the intrinsic connection between health and natural environment; the mystical energy of the desert sun that draws visitors to this landscape; and the existing topography and character of the resort itself.
Rather than imposing a monumental architectural statement, SWABACK conceived a relatively simple structure where sound walls and dense landscaping contribute as much to the experience as the building itself. The spa’s most dramatic gesture is experiential—guests enter at grade before descending into the facility, an intentional sequence inspired by ancient Turkish baths that creates a sense of discovery and retreat. Eighteen indoor-outdoor treatment rooms dissolve the boundary between interior and landscape, allowing the desert atmosphere and climate to permeate the wellness experience.
Together, these interventions demonstrate SWABACK’s commitment to design that listens first—understanding what exists, what works, and what the place itself suggests—before making moves that enhance rather than override.
