LoneHollow Ranch — Dining Hall and Club Room

Nestled in the Texas Hill Country outside Vanderpool, a landscape of limestone ridges, live oak canopies, and river-cut terrain, Lonehollow Ranch is a Young Life retreat campus built to serve more than 500 guests at a time. The land carries its own character, unhurried and particular, and the architecture answers it in kind.

SWABACK provided architecture for the two buildings at the heart of the campus: a 25,000-square-foot club room serving as the central gathering and performance venue, and a 15,345-square-foot dining hall and kitchen designed for the rhythms of high-volume, community-centered daily life. The buildings are not institutional in scale despite their size. They are scaled to encounter, to the kind of place where a meal or an evening performance becomes a formative experience rather than a logistical one.

The club room anchors the social life of the campus. Large in footprint, it is organized to feel intimate in use, a space that can hold a full-capacity assembly and still allow a small group to find its own corner within it. The dining hall works in counterpoint: a building that functions with precision at volume but never loses the warmth that makes a shared meal feel like something more than sustenance.

Together, the two buildings give the campus its gravitational center, the places where the community gathers, where the day begins and ends, and where the lasting character of the retreat experience is made.
